Masjid Raya Al-Mashun or commonly known Masjid Raya Medan is one of the remains of a Sultan of Deli in North Sumatra named Sultan Ma'moen Al Rasyid Perkasa Alam (1873-1924) which is very monumental and has a very high historical value. Mosque building area is about 5000 m2 and built on an area of 18.000 m2. The construction of this mosque takes 3 years from August 21, 1906 until 19 September 1909. This Grand Mosque has been aged more than 1 century and including one of the oldest buildings in the city of Medan.
Since it was built until now, Masjid Raya Medan has never been renovated. According to one of the managers of the mosque, the local government of North Sumatra had planned renovation of parts of Masjid Raya Al-Mashun which has been damaged by age and expansion in order to accommodate more Jama'ah. However, because of opposition from various parties who are worried about the artistic values of the original architectural style of this building is gone, finally the local government only add mosque supporting facilities, such as the addition of a place of female ablution (1980) without tinkering with the main building. which is why, the building of this mosque is still intact as the original form when built more than a century.
Thoroughly the shape of the mosque building is a combination of Arabic-style architecture, Indian, Spanish and Malay. The blend of architectural design produces an artistic dimension of building value and contains high aesthetic and ethical values. The ornaments that adorn the exterior of the building with five black dome on top makes the mosque architecture becomes more artistic look. One of the largest domes is located right in the center, above the main hall, and the other four smaller domes are on the four sides of the wing, making it appear as if flanking the main dome. On top of each of the black dome there is an ornament that became the symbol of Islam, the Crescent. Inside the mosque, visitors can see two pulpits made of marble. One pulpit is at the front and used as a place to deliver the sermon. Another one is in the back and is used as a place for echoing the call to prayer. Kedaua Pulpit filled with various kinds of ornaments and decorations tesebut make the room inside this mosque was so luxurious.
